Historical Information

The village appears to have been founded during the Turkish occupation and more specifically after suppressing the uprising of Victoras Zempetou by the Turks in the middle of the 17th century A.D, when the other settlements had been ruined – e.g. Troullinos – and a large number of civilians had been slaughtered.

Naming

As far as the name Oikos is concerned, there are two versions available explaining why the village was given this name.

According to the first one, two brothers, Nicos and Panayiotis were the first to reside in the area. The location where Nicos built his house was named Kalopanayiotis and the location where Nicos built his house (“oikos” means house in Greek) was named Oikos.

The Community Council supports this version mentioning that the brothers were actually three, Nicos, Panayiotis and Petros and that they were the first to inhabit the area. Nicos chose to live in the area where the village is located, Panayiotis in an area opposite the village which was named Kalopanayiotis because it was very good land, while Petros chose the region of Solia and more specifically the area where the village of Kakopetria is located and which was named like that because the land was not good.

The second version states that a resident of Kalopanayiotis or of the wider area, as the Community Council adds, was the one who built the first house (oikos) in the area and therefore the area and the community gradually acquired the name Oikos.
