One should not fail to refer to the contribution of the community of Oikos to the fights against the different enemies which conquered Cyprus.

The communities of the valley of Marathasa faced the various enemy challenges as a team as the problem affected all of them.

However, at the same time, we can follow the village’s contribution to more recent events such as the ones which took place during the British occupation and the invasion of the Turks in 1974 through solid examples. At the village there are two hideouts which sheltered EOKA fighters during the liberating fight of 1955-59. In fact, a lot of residents of the village were members of EOKA and operated using pseudonyms, this way helping the cause of the fight.

What is more, a lot of residents fought against the Turks in 1974, while some of them were either captured and tortured or are still missing, leaving their relatives suffering and wondering for their fate. Charalambos Casparis, a hero of Oikos, had been missing since the summer of 1974 until 2011, when his remains, which were found at the Turkish-Cypriot village Tziaos, were identified using DNA testing.
